Sound Art:

Jay has always been intrigued with the intersections of sound, visual art and science. His work grows out of his background studies in music, and electrical technology. It also often incorporates his patents in the field of musical instruments and sound production. One such patent deals with the tone generation and amplification of music wire inside tubular enclosures. These music tubes are activated by various means and arrayed in interesting patterns.

One kinetic musical sculpture using these tubular elements was created for a Westfield Children’s Museum. This “tubular harp” as it was called could be played by twisting the individual tubes for different pitches.

Other sculptures are activated by electronically controlled solenoids used for striking the strings. Jay’s sculptures celebrate and expand the three dimensional presence that acoustic instruments can have.
